In the opening pages of Genesis we are told something remarkable: human beings are made in the image and likeness of God. But what does that actually mean?
For me, one of the clearest answers is creativity.
If God is the Creator, then it follows that those made in God’s image must also be creators in our own small way, what I like to call “little creators.” Creation is not limited to procreation. It is the act of shaping the world around us: building, painting, writing, gardening, cooking, crafting, imagining, and making things that did not exist before.
In this video, you’ll see me at the torch creating glass hummingbird wings, part of the process behind my crystal glass hummingbirds, while I reflect on the deeper meaning of creativity, the Genesis story of creation, and why the creative impulse seems to be woven into the very fabric of being human.
I also share the story of an abstract painting series I once created, acrylic on 2′ x 3′ canvases, that slowly revealed itself to be the Seven Days of Creation. I didn’t plan it that way. It emerged along the way, reminding me that sometimes the act of creating is also an act of discovery.
Whether you are an artist, a craftsperson, a writer, a builder, or simply someone who enjoys making things with your hands and imagination, creativity may be one of the most sacred parts of being human.
We are, in our own humble way, little creators.
If you enjoyed this reflection, please like the video and subscribe to the channel. It helps the work continue and lets me know there are others out there who love the craft of making things and reflecting on the deeper meaning behind them.
Thanks for watching.
